Are you still pushing on Facebook? Ya Dead Wrong, well at least that's what the analysts are saying. There's so many media outlets out here, that in order to be effective on all or any of them, you have to have the team that cares and moves like you. Lets face it, the future is diluting the industry. If you’re only Facebook, Ya Dead Wrong, if you’re only on Twitter or Instagram...Ya Dead Wrong!
If you skipped over some of the announcements that has been all over FB and IG lately, you’ve missed the social media giants tell us that our free promotion days on their sites are coming to an end. Pay or come up with something clever to trick the algorithms set in place. I'm not going to get technical about this but I am going to get straight to the point.
I come from the era of “Hand-to-Hand combat!” We were in the trenches, meeting the fans face to face and getting our likes in the form of appreciation for giving out CDs. Yes, we occasionally threw CDs like frisbees but never at the alarming rate we throw them now. But the industry standards were quite high and that meant less debris in our car and on the sides of the road. Now the information highway is getting all of the music clutter. It makes you wonder how effective is your music campaign, are you really reaching the potential that you're aiming for? Do email blast work anymore? Fake Twitter and Instagram followers and likes really get you where you need to be? My A & R buddies tell me that artists are missing the mark horribly. It's easy to say, "Keep doin' yo thang" but what is yo thang doin' for you? If you're not spending time on your hand-to-hand combat game...Ya Dead wrong!
Now, I'm not completely against internet promoting but I do suggest a balance between the two. IG just cleared out a lot of followers and with FB controlling when and who gets to see your post, your H2H game better be in the mix. IG was and still is my go to social media place if I want to talk about @DJNothinNice, @PapaRue, @KalGulley, or just straight up talking about MacAttack or n'Rotation The DJ Mag.
I will fade to black on the net for now and get back to the business of H2H combat of promoting. Disconnect from social media for a few and get the instant comments and likes from the fans in the streets, and take the DJ some vinyl. It never went anywhere! S/O @Erika_Records (www.ErikaRecords.com) for "Keeping Vinyl Alive."
