There's nothing like the perfect Christmas gift. Jewelry, a new car or that iPad mini with retina(white & silver 'wink'). But seriously the theory "it's the thought that counts", never has been more true when I unwrapped my "Hip Hop Family Tree" comics by Ed Piskor. Yep I said comics. My love for the DJs has brought me plenty of gifts; from special edition Vinyl to Pink Beats by Dre headphones and a Beats pill to match. But this comic reaches out to the core of what drives me. A comic about the the birth of the industry.
HHFT (Hip Hop Family Tree) is hip hops biography, a encyclopedia of sorts. This gift took me on the DJs journey from the parks to the rec rooms of the South Bronx. The end of the 1970s went out with a BOOM and ushered in the HIP HOP music genre and created culture that has expanded globally. ! Ed Piskor has brought the history of Hip Hop to a medium that's easily accepted and respected by the masses - the comic book!
Piskor introduced me to the first block parties and performances of our old-school pioneers: DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the Funky 4 + 1, Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, The Sugarhill Gang, and RUN-DMC. Not to mention we see the first managers and Hip Hop moguls Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin. And for you "Yo MTV Rap" heads...Piskor also outlines the rise of Fab 5 Freddy. Fab 5 started as a graffiti master and later directed the west coasts on Snoop Doggs "What's My Name" video. Now back to the matter at hand...HHFT!
We all know that I'm all about the DJs, but HHFT dives into it all! A welcomed gift and a educational toy ;-). I found a sample for you guys to read and check out where Hip Hop came from!
Thanks boss, this is going on the shelf!
